Proposed tutoring/learning center approved for Houston Road in Macon

The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission approved Monday a tutoring/learning center planned for Houston Avenue.

The commission approved a conditional-use permit to allow the center at 3707 Houston Ave., in about 3,000 square feet of a mostly vacant shopping center.

The Core Enrichment Center is planned to be an activity-based learning center that offers free tutoring, Internet, games and other activities for children, applicant Robert Holman said.

“We will be working with principally low-income families in the area,” Holman said.

While the center will accept children from ages 5 to 18, Holman said he expects most of the children would come from a nearby elementary school.

The center would be open after school during the school year and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday during the summer, he said.

The center plans to have two employees to provide services for 10 students.
