Tutoring/learning center planned on Houston Road in Macon

A tutoring/learning center is planned in a shopping center on Houston Avenue pending approval by the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission.

A conditional-use permit to allow the center at 3707 Houston Ave. is on Monday’s commission meeting agenda. Plans are to lease 3,000 square feet in a 10,446-square-foot shopping center. The applicant is Robert Holman with RLH Ventures Inc.

The center will be a nonprofit, activity-based learning center that features free tutoring, controlled Internet, computer use, storytelling, games and other activities for children, according to the commission’s staff report.

The center would operate 3:30-6:30 p.m., Monday-Friday during the academic year and 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday during the summer break.

The center will use two employees to provide services for 10 students.

“Since the facility will operate within an existing shopping center with shared parking, there is a concern regarding conflict with other businesses within the center,” according to the report.

The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. in the 10th floor conference room in the Willie C. Hill City Hall Annex, 682 Cherry St.
