Macon movie theater evacuated; suspicious package turned out to be bag with children’s items

Staff reportMay 5, 2013

The AmStar 16 movie theater in Macon on Zebulon Road was evacuated around 3:30 p.m. Sunday after a patron found a suspicious bag. It was apparently left by a movie goer from an earlier show. The patron alerted AmStar staff and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Macon-Bibb fighters and Macon Police Department’s bomb squad were dispatched to the theater.

The suspicious bag ended up being a back pack containing children’s books, clothes, and other items belonging to a child, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

“To avoid incidents like this in the future, the public is being asked to make sure that they retrieve all of their belongings before leaving the theater,” the news release stated.

The theater reopened around 6:15 p.m.
