Mercer to remember Ferrol Sams

Mercer University will hold a remembrance of alumnus and acclaimed author, Ferrol Sams, at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Newton Chapel.

Sams, a rural doctor who wrote eight books, died Jan. 29 at age 90. His is known for his celebrated writing, which is steeped in Southern traditions and folklore. His novel, “The Whisper of the River,” is still taught in Mercer classrooms, according to a news release.

The event, which is sponsored by the department of English, will include several remembrances and readings of Sams’ work and his 1986 Mercer commencement address. The event is free and open to the public.
