Clear-cut timber harvest approved for Old Clinton Road

The Macon-Bibb Planning & Zoning Commission agreed Monday to allow a clear-cut timber harvest of about 70 acres on Old Clinton Road in Macon.

A conditional-use permit for 2106 Old Clinton Road was sought by Sandy Callaway owner of a Watkinsville timber company, who said he represented the landowner.

A couple bought the property in 1988 as an investment which didn’t worked out, he said. Although Callaway didn’t mention the landowner’s name, R.W. Whitehurst of Athens is listed as the owner, according to the Macon-Bibb County Tax Assessor’s Office.

The property has been for sale about five years, and with a timber cut, the owner would at least “get some value out of it,” he said.

The commission asked that Callaway leave a 50-foot buffer on the northeastern and southwestern sides of the property to protect adjacent residential property.

The commission voted 3-0 to approved the permit. Commissioners Damon King and Kamal Azar were absent.

Although the commission was expected to review a certificate of appropriateness to allow the demolition of a house at 645 Arlington Place, applicant John Losey did not attend the meeting.

The matter was automatically withdrawn.

5423 White House Plantation Road: Variance in side yard setback requirements to allow a building addition, PDR District. Tim Hemingway, applicant. Approved.
