Former Gov. Huckabee gives high praise to local pregnancy center

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was in Macon on Thursday evening lending his star to the cause of Caring Solutions Pregnancy Center.

He was the featured speaker at the local organization’s annual fundraiser at the Macon City Auditorium.

“I’m passionately pro-life because I think it’s one of those issues that really define us as a civilization,” said Huckabee, who hosts a TV show on Fox News and a national radio program. “I appreciate what Caring Solutions is doing because this is not a protest organization. This is a lift up the hurting organization. It’s all about taking women who are in a very tough place in life, not condemning them, not judging them, but embracing them with tangible help. ... I think that’s the kind of admirable action within a community that benefits everyone in the community. You don’t even have to be philosophically pro-life to appreciate what Caring Solutions is doing.

“If I can lend some support to them tonight and bring some attention and hopefully help them raise some money, then great,” he said.

With offices in Macon, 112 Pierce Ave., and Warner Robins, 306 North Davis Drive, Caring Solutions Pregnancy Center offers support to women with unplanned pregnancies with services including pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, prenatal care, and post-natal care.

During an interview before the event, as crowds of supporters were entering the auditorium, Huckabee gave a lot of credit to everyone who contributed to the fundraiser.

“When these folks are giving tonight, what they’re doing, they’re not just giving to a charity and walking away,” he said. “What they’re really doing is making it possible for children in their community to live. They’re making it possible for women in their community to have a place where there’s hope rather than hurt.”

Paul and Mary Anne Kelley said they make a point to attend the Caring Solutions fundraiser every year. “We support the concept. We believe very much in life,” Paul Kelley said. “It’s exciting (Huckabee) came to speak to us.”

Don and Elaine East traveled from Griffin for the event. Their daughter works for Caring Solutions.

“We also like Mike Huckabee,” Don East said.

“He’s a very good servant,” Elaine East added. “... With pro-life and other moral issues, he’s in line with a lot of our thoughts on things.”

Patti Stevenson volunteers with Caring Solutions. She said she came to know the organization about 19 years ago. “I had a crisis pregnancy at 17,” the Warner Robins resident said. A member at her church suggested she seek out services from the group.

“They advised me to get involved,” she said. “Now my daughter is almost 19.”
