Its time to get jazzy on First Friday when the Mercer University Jazz Ensemble performs with jazz trumpeter Gordon Vernick in a free concert in Fickling Hall on Friday night.
Mercers Monty Cole directs the concert, which includes works by Johnny Mercer, Frank Mantooth, John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
Gordon Vernick is recognized for his virtuosic and creative approach to jazz improvisation and also for his dynamic teaching style, Cole said in a news release. He is a phenomenal musician and a truly great spirit in the field of jazz education. We are proud to feature him with our ensembles.
Vernick is an associate professor of music and coordinator of jazz studies at Georgia State University. As a professional trumpet player, he has performed in musical mediums from symphony orchestra to jazz quartet and has freelanced all over the world.
His weekly radio show, Jazz Insights on WMLB Atlanta, is available in podcast form on iTunes. The podcasts have been featured on a number of websites, including The New York Times website, and have been downloaded more than 5 million times since May 2009. His latest CD, Destination, was released last year.
