A look at upcoming events in Houston County in April

The “2013 Claxton Road Race at the Landings -- a Run to End Alzheimer’s Disease” is Saturday.

The 5K and 10.5K races start at the Landing Pointe Shopping Center, 402 Ga. 247 S., 1.6 miles south of the Museum of Aviation and extend on a scenic course through Statham’s Landing subdivision.

Packet pickup starts at 7 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m. T-shirts and awards will be given. More than 435 runners and walkers participated in the 2012 event, which raised $28,443 for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. All proceeds from this year’s race benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sponsors of the race are Robins Pacers Running Club, Macon Tracks Piedmont Sports Medicine and Run & See Georgia. For more information, contact John Rowlands, race director, at 922-6556.

The annual Jerome Stephens Sr. Golf Classic will be held at Waterford Club, 620 Ga. 96, Bonaire at 11 a.m. April 12. The four-man scramble format with mulligans is $75 per person, which includes lunch, range balls, greens fees and a cart. Registration and lunch begin at 11 a.m. with tee off at 12:30 p.m. Only soft spike shoes can be worn on the course. The golf classic raises funds for the Life Changers Center of Warner Robins, which is a mission of the Union Grove Community Enhancement Group Inc., a 501©3 non-profit organization. Its mission statement is “teaching people to fish, feeding them for a lifetime.” In more than 17 years in existence, the organization has helped people from all life experiences with the skills to live self-reliantly.

The Life Changers Center provides classes to address setting goals, establishing customer service skills, anger management, interview skills and leadership development. Their six-month program prepares attendees to support themselves and prosper independently in the community and to support others to become life changers. The Warner Robins Community Concert Association presents its final concert for the season on April 14 at First United Methodist Church, 205 N. Davis Drive, Warner Robins. Griffin Choral Arts, an auditioned community chorus serving Griffin-Spalding County and the surrounding area, will be performing. The group was founded in 2007 by Artistic Director Stephen J. Mulder and Jan Whalen.

The well-known regional group has performed for the Forsythia Festival, the Music of the Holidays and at Spivey Hall. The group has collaborated with the Vega String Quartet, the Griffin Ballet Theatre, the Clayton State University Chorale, the Lamar County Middle School Chorus, the Atlanta Percussion Trio and many professional instrumentalists and vocalists throughout the greater Atlanta area. The concert begins at 3 p.m. with tickets available at the door for $10. Admittance for students of all ages is free of charge.
