A week after a small fire at an east Macon nursing home, an elderly resident died of smoke inhalation.

Betty Smith, 82, was one of 11 people sent to the hospital after the fire at the Rosewood Nursing Center on March 25, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

At about 2:40 a.m. that Monday, firefighters were called to investigate smoke in the area of the nursing facility at 2795 Finney Circle, off Millerfield Road.

The commander quickly called a second alarm for more firefighters because a small blaze in the mechanical room was sending smoke through the center.

Smith was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m. Monday in the intensive care unit of The Medical Center of Central Georgia, where she had been since the blaze, Jones said.
