College baseball update

dshirley@macon.comApril 2, 2013

Georgia Tech and Mercer face off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Claude Smith Field, and it should be an interesting offensive display in the game.

The two teams met earlier this season with the Yellow Jackets pulling out a 16-9 win, and both teams have continued to put up big offensive numbers throughout the season.

Georgia Tech ranks first in the nation in batting average (.345), second in home runs (29) and third in runs (237) and hits (335). Mercer leads the nation in runs scored (253) and home runs (32) and is fourth in hits (333), while ranking 26th in average (303).

Also strong

Georgia State's offense has been terrific, as well. The Panthers are second in the nation in average (.339), runs scored (247) and hits (360).

Tough division

Georgia Tech is 21-6 overall and 8-4 in ACC, but the Yellow Jackets are just third in the Coastal Division. North Carolina is 9-2 while Virginia is 9-3 atop the division. The Tar Heels, who were ranked No. 1 last week, are 25-2, while the Cavaliers are 25-3.

Still struggling

Georgia got a nice win over Kentucky during the weekend, but the Bulldogs are still last in the SEC's East Division. Georgia is 10-19 overall and only 1-8 in conference play. They host Missouri, which is sixth in the East Division at 2-7, this weekend.

Still on top

Mercer remains tied with Kennesaw State for first place in the A-Sun. The Bears and Owls are both 6-3 in the conference. Mercer is 23-8 overall, and it plays at North Florida this weekend.
