Kenneth Neuhart, of Bonaire, was found dead Wednesday morning in a heavily wooded area behind the 300 block of Old Perry Road, Houston County sheriff’s Capt. Jon Holland said.

Neuhart, 82, had been missing since Tuesday morning.

Georgia Search and Rescue and state Department of Natural Resources representatives had joined Houston County firefighters and sheriff’s deputies in the search in the dense woods that include swamps, Holland said.

Neuhart died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a suicide, a Houston County sheriff’s news release stated.

Authorities previously said Neuhart was believed to have been suffering from some emotional and medical issues and likely was in possession of a handgun. The gun was found near the body.

The search was focused on a 1 1/2-mile radius from the Old Perry Road and Walnut Ridge Drive intersection, where neighbors had seen Neuhart about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
