Westside survives test from Baldwin

Published: February 14, 2013

Westside jumped out of a three-quarter-long quagmire to beat Baldwin 37-34 in the semifinals of the Region 2-AAAA tournament Thursday at Westside.

The Seminoles scored 17 points in the fourth quarter after managing just 20 through the first three.

Baldwin used a slow-down approach, and Westside struggled to find any continuity on offense. The Braves, however, weren’t taking advantage of their long possessions, but instead missed shots following a number of 30-40 second possessions. The slow-down offense also allowed Westside to stay close while it played poorly on offense.

Malik Harden finally pushed the Seminoles ahead with a pair of baskets with midway through the first minute of the fourth quarter. The Seminoles never trailed again.

Baldwin made it interesting with a pair of 3-pointers by Tyree Solomon in the final six seconds, but the Seminoles made enough free throws to survive.
