The Westfield varsity wrestling team followed up its GISA duals championship with a team title in the traditional meet, as well. Seven Hornets wrestled for individual crowns and six of them won as Westfield cruised to the title. Bulloch Academy finished second.
Josh Kinnebrew, Conner Cawthon, Griffin Cawthon, Austin Jenkins, Ty Forrester and Bryce Westmoreland all won for Westfield in their respective weight classifications. Cotton Hammerle finished second in his class.
Veterans at Turner Field
Veterans head baseball coach David Coffey continues to reap benefits from his playing days at the University of Georgia. His current players also are making out well.
During his time at Georgia, Coffey struck up a friendship with one of the teams managers Justin Johnson, now director of ticket sales for the Atlanta Braves. According to Coffey, the two corresponded during the 2012 GHSA playoffs. Coffey asked if high school teams ever played at Turner Field. Johnson said they do, but the facility was booked at the time.
A couple of months ago, he called me and said he had a slot for us, if we were interested, Coffey wrote in e-mail. I jumped on the opportunity.
As a result, Veterans will play First Presbyterian Day School at Turner Field on April 13. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Coffey said he gave FPD first crack at the Turner Field experience because Vikings head coach Jim Turner stepped up to help Veterans fill its schedule with a single game. Originally, that game was scheduled to be played at FPD, but Turner was willing to lose the home game in exchange for a day at Turner Field.
Several local wrestlers qualify for GHSA state
Northsides Clark Hellwig earned the best GHSA sectional finish for county wrestlers, placing fourth at the Class AAAAA East Sectional Saturday in Loganville. As a result, Hellwig claimed one of 16 spots in the 182-pound weight class for the Class AAAAA state meet which begins with weigh-ins Thursday in Macon. Hellwig will be joined by Northside teammates Shaady Hassan and Diego Smith, who each finished sixth in their respective weight classes at the Loganville Sectional. Warner Robins will send two wrestlers to the Class AAAAA meet: Jeremy Fleury and Tyler Cranford.
Perry qualified four wrestlers for state at the Class AAAA East Sectional at West Laurens. Rex Lower finished seventh in his class. Cody Eakins, Mark Ray and Dillon Hanners each finished eighth. Veterans will send two wrestlers to the Class AAAA state meet: Marquise Franklin and Grant Lensch. Franklin was fifth and Lensch sixth.
Green impresses at state
Chandler Green of Warner Robins turned in the best local performance at the GHSA state swim meet last week at Georgia Tech. Green bested about two-thirds of the field in the preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle in the Class A-AAAAA division. He also beat more than half his competitors in the 100-yard breaststroke. Green finished 21st in both events.
Dalton and Westminster won team titles in the boys and girls divisions, respectively, of the Class A-AAAAA meet. Parkview (boys) and Lambert (girls) won in Class AAAAAA.
