Kya Poe-Cochran banked in a runner in the lane to give Veterans the go-ahead basket with 32 seconds left in a 34-32 win over West Laurens Tuesday in the Region 2-AAAA tournament at Westside.

Veterans earned its first state playoff appearance in state history with the win. The seventh-seeded Warhawks will play Howard in the semifinals on Thursday.

“This is what you’re measured by, making the state playoffs,” Veterans head coach Nicole Miranda said. “As you can tell, we’re pretty excited.”

West Laurens had two chances late to tie after Poe-Cochran’s basket.

The Raiders made just one free throw with 15 seconds left – they went 8-of-17 from the foul line in the game – but had another chance after Poe-Cochran made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Warhawks back up by two. The Raiders, however, didn’t get a shot off at the end of the game.
