Rain cancels Georgia Day observance at Fort Hawkins

Published: February 12, 2013

With another half inch of rain possible Tuesday, the Georgia Day festivities are canceled at Fort Hawkins.

Georgia was founded Feb. 12, 1733 and a symbolic campfire had been planned for 2 p.m. at Macon’s historic birthplace off Emery Highway.

The colony’s founder, Gen. James Oglethorpe , camped on the eastern Ocmulgee River in 1739 on his way to meet the Creek Nation on the western Chattahoochee River at Coweta.
