Police chase ends in Houston Avenue crash

Published: February 6, 2013

Bibb County sheriff’s deputies’ pursuit of a vehicle reported stolen in Warner Robins ended with the yellow Jeep crashing into a concrete pillar at the corner of Houston and Newberg avenues Wednesday evening.

Deputies on routine patrol on Ga. 247 were already on the lookout for the Jeep Rubicon, which was headed north toward Macon, said Lt. Sean Defoe of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

“This guy, once he spotted our deputies, he took off,” he said. “Only thing they could do was try and catch up to him.”

The driver fled north onto Houston Avenue and lost control, crumpling the Jeep’s front end against a pillar at the front of a strip mall, said Defoe, who did not know the exact time of the late-afternoon crash.

The male driver was checked by paramedics and did not appear to be seriously injured, he said. The suspect was taken into custody and turned over to Warner Robins police, who are handling the case, Defoe said.

Houston Avenue was blocked by emergency vehicles until shortly after 6 p.m., when the Jeep was towed away.
