Burns: Officer likely won’t return to same job if cleared in Kroger shooting

If a GBI investigation shows a Macon police officer was justified in fatally shooting a man outside the Kroger grocery store on Pio Nono Avenue in December, the officer likely won’t return to the same job.

Chief Mike Burns said the GBI has asked that police not comment about the investigation into the Dec. 21 shooting of Sammie “Junebug” Davis Jr. by Officer Clayton Sutton.

“There’s a lot of things I’d love to say, but they’re the lead investigating agency,” Burns said Wednesday.

If Sutton is found to have committed a crime in shooting Davis, he will be fired, the chief said.

“If the GBI says it’s justified, then I’ll have to find a place for him and it’ll probably have to be out of the public because the media and some elected officials have made it dangerous for him to do his job,” he said.

Sutton has been on administrative leave since the shooting.
