MLK Day events planned

Various events have been planned to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Houston County.

• The 17th annual Martin Luther King Unity Breakfast will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the New Beginning Center at First Baptist Church Garmon Street, 210 Garmon St., Warner Robins. The program also will recognize the Warner Robins Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in honor of its centennial anniversary. The legacy of Rev. Willie L. Reid, former pastor of Fellowship Bible Baptist, also will be honored. Tickets are $5, which includes breakfast. For more information or to buy tickets, call 955-8662 or 987-9935. Tickets may be purchased at the door the day of the event or in advance at the church office. Proceeds will help provide scholarships to high school students.

• The Houston County branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference will host the annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Day March on Monday. The one-mile march will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Oldfield Baptist Church, 1500 Houston Lake Road, Perry. It will end at New Hope Baptist Church, 1300 Washington St., Perry. The Rev. Daron D. Lee will be the keynote speaker. Breakfast will be served immediately after the program. • CK’s Club and Lounge and Masonic Lodge 207 sponsor the fifth annual I Have a Dream Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Monday. The event will take place 1-4 p.m. in the Northgate Plaza parking lot at 536 N. Davis Drive. There will be speakers, free food, moon walks and more.

Pageant applications available

Applications are now available for two midstate pageants.

The 2013 Miss Georgia Peach pageant will be held March 16 at Fort Valley State University. Queens are ambassadors of the Georgia Peach Festival. Girls and women ages 4 through 24 may apply. The deadline is March 9.

The 2013 Miss Georgia Strawberry pageant will be held April 20 at Middle Georgia State College in Cochran. Girls and women of all ages may enter in several different divisions. The early bird deadline is April 2, and the final deadline for all applications and fees is April 15.
