Midstate charities, other organizations could use your help

December 26, 2012

This is the season for getting and giving.

The other day I got to thinking that there are several local organizations that give all year long. As we approach the end of the year, I wonder whether you might join me in giving to some of those worthy organizations.

Among those that provide needed services to us is the Volunteer Dental Clinic of the Rehoboth Baptist Association through its Life Care Ministries. This nonprofit operation provides dental services for the poor among us. Their volunteer dentists and professional dental staff are to be applauded for their service. Additional volunteers are needed, and there is a continuing financial need to provide and replace supplies. You can contact them at (478) 953-7770 and, if you desire, send a tax deductible donation to 3208 U.S. 41 N., Byron, GA 31008.

The Middle Georgia chapter of the American Red Cross provides disaster assistance to families in a 22 county area. Their volunteers are on-call daily to either provide disaster assessment or disaster assistance. More volunteers are needed to supplement those already trained and servicing the public. Financial assistance is necessary to continue to provide the wide range of services they provide. You may contact the chapter at (478) 743-8671. You can send a tax-deductible donation to 195 Holt Avenue, Macon, GA 31201.

Many are facing financial difficulties during the continuing economic environment. Many are in need of food. The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank is available to provide foodstuffs to those in need in Middle Georgia. If you shop for groceries, I don’t have to tell you how expensive groceries have become. In order to continue their services, donations are needed. You can send a tax-deductible donation to 4490 Ocmulgee East Blvd., Macon, GA 31217. You may call them at (478) 742-3958.

The Salvation Army provides a wide range of services to our community and those in need. If you wish to make a tax deductible donation to them, you can mail it to P.O. Box 13386, Macon, GA 31208. You may also contact them at (478) 922-2226.

There are two local organizations that support our four-legged friends. The Houston County Humane Society provides adoptive services for dogs and cats to provide loving homes for God’s loved creatures. They can always use volunteers to work with the animals and financial donations are greatly appreciated. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to them, you can mail it to P.O. Box 9588, Warner Robins, GA 31095-9588. You may contact them at (478) 599-0211. For additional information, their webpage is humanesocietyhoco.org.

Another organization that supports our four-legged friends is the Friends of Perry Animal Shelter. They provide pet adoptions and are advocating the building of a new animal shelter in Perry. They have cats/kittens and dogs/puppies at the Warner Robins PetSmart from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. They have a Facebook page, search FOPAS for additional information. To make a tax deductible donation mail to FOPAS, P.O. Box 2001, Perry, GA 31069. You may also call (478) 988-7854 to request further information and inquire as to volunteer opportunities.
