FCA event to feature Bowden, former UGA standout Scott

November 28, 2012

The Flint River FCA will host a Night of Champions Coaches Conference Tuesday with an emphasis on middle school and high school coaches in the area.

But organizers stress the evening is open to anyone who wants to attend. Former Florida State University head football coach Bobby Bowden and former University of Georgia football player Lindsay Scott will be the guest speakers.

The evening was planned as a way to help recharge and re-energize coaches, who are about halfway through a school year.

“A lot of people don’t realize that coaches, especially football coaches, start planning for next season at the end of this season. So they are really working year-round to build their programs. They make a huge impact on their players, but the time that they are coaching is time away from their own families,” said Scott Taylor, FCA Huddle leader at Bonaire Middle and one of the organizers of the event.

Daryl McElwain, area director, Flint River FCA, said Bobby Bowden, who holds the NCAA record for most career wins, has a long standing commitment to FCA.

“I read an interview one time where Mark Richt recalled the night FSU won the national championship,” McElwain said. “After the game, Coach Bowden gathered his coaches and asked them if they felt different. When they replied no, he said that the only thing that changes your life is Jesus Christ.”

McElwain said when he took over the Flint FCA leadership role in the spring, one of his goals was to encourage coaches.

“People a lot of time want things from coaches. So we want to be the group that helps to refresh them,” McElwain said.

To that end, the FCA is accepting sponsorships so coaches can attend the Night of Champions free of charge.

The price to sponsor a table for eight coaches is $300, which includes a meal, silent auction entry and keynote address by Bowden. For $450, coaches will also receive tickets for the 6 p.m. meet-and-greet session with Bowden and Scott.

“We want the coaches to feel special,” McElwain said.

“But it is a night that anybody would love to attend.”

“Coaches at any level just have an amazing influence over our children,” said McElwain. “This is a night to honor them and to thank them for their service and for that influence.”

The Flint River FCA Night of Champions Coaches Conference will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Crosspoint Baptist Church in Perry. Individual tickets for the dinner are $40.

Tickets that include the meet-and-greet and the dinner are $60. For ticket sales or questions regarding the event, contact Taylor at 338-0677, Adam Hamlin at 972-8880 or McElwain at 397-6831. Ticket sales are open to the public.
