Teenager killed while walking to bus in Cordele

Published: November 27, 2012

A 16-year-old girl was killed Tuesday morning when she was struck by a car while walking to a bus stop in Cordele.

Precious Burns and her younger brother were crossing U.S. 41 near Drayton Lane and the State Farmers Market about 6:30 a.m., said Michael Fraser Jr., Crisp County deputy coroner.

Burns’ brother crossed first and was not injured. He told authorities that his sister walked into the path of a car traveling on the three-lane road, said Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Garrett Fiveash.

Burns died at the scene. No charges have been filed against the driver of the car, Fiveash said.

There’s no crosswalk or street lights in the area where Burns and her brother crossed the road. It was still dark at the time of the accident, he said.

Burns, who lived on U.S. 41, was a sophomore at Crisp County High School, Fraser said.
