WARNER ROBINS -- Greg Robinson has resigned as the head football coach at Houston County after five years on the job.

Robinson cited family considerations as the reason for his resignation when reached by phone Monday.

“I love it here in Houston County, and I love the school,” Robinson said. “I just wanted to step away to spend more time with my family.”

He went 17-33 in five years leading the Bears’ program. Robinson’s best season came in 2010, when the Bears went 6-4 and came within a win over Hardaway of making the state playoffs. The Bears beat Warner Robins that season for just the second time in school history.

Houston County went 3-7 in 2012. The Bears beat Harris County – which just beat Warner Robins to advance to the GHSA Class AAAAA quarterfinals – to open the season. Houston County, however, lost six of its final seven games, although the Bears did score 30 or more points in six of their 10 games. They allowed an average of 35 points per game.

Robinson came to Houston County after a successful stint at Dodge County.

He led the Indians to a 38-27 record in six years in Eastman. Dodge County had back-to-back 9-3 seasons in 2006 and 2007. After going 6-14 in his first two seasons in Eastman, Robinson went 32-13 in his final four seasons. The Dodge County school board didn’t renew his contract after he led the Indians to the second round of the Class AA playoffs in 2007. He’d coached in Dodge County since 1993. The Moultrie native also spent six years as a coach at Effingham County.

Robinson said he planned to remain a physical education and health teacher with the Houston County school system.

“I just love this school system,” he said. “We have a house down here. We’re not planning to leave.”
