Two Peach firefighters struck by vehicle at accident scene

Published: November 19, 2012

Two Peach County firefighters were struck and injured by a pickup truck Tuesday evening while working the scene of an earlier accident on Ga. 96 just west of Interstate 75 and Housers Mill Road.

Drivers in both accidents were charged with prescription drug-based DUI offenses.

According to Georgia State Patrol trooper Marshall Harris, Peach firefighters Donnie Parker and Dalroy Ruppert were transported to The Medical Center of Central Georgia with non-life threatening injuries when they were struck by a pickup truck driven by Charles Lee Towns, 55, of Fort Valley.

Towns was arrested and charged with DUI and failure to obey a person directing traffic.

The firefighters and other personnel were at the scene of an earlier two-car accident that occurred at 6:14 p.m., involving 34-year-old Hermelinda Garcia of Fort Valley, who was also arrested for and charged with DUI involving prescription medications.

According to the GSP, Garcia backed out of a private driveway onto Ga. 96, when her vehicle was struck by another traveling west on Ga. 96. Neither Garcia or any of her three male passengers were hurt, but she was also charged with failure to yield and crossing a median.
