Middle Georgia GHSA football playoff capsules

Jones County (7-3)

Head coach: Dwight Jones.

Region seed: No. 3 in Region 2-AAAAA.

Playoff opponent: at Glynn Academy (7-3).

Key wins: Alcovy, Lakeside-Evans, Houston County.

Key players: RB Undre Williams (1,863 rushing yards, 30 touchdowns); FB Walker Juhan (1,126 rushing yards), OL Jackson Williamson; LB Doug West; SS Nick Bentley; LB Austin Petrosky.

Scouting report: Jones County’s wing-T offense has been dominant this season, leading the Greyhounds to their first playoff trip since 2004. The Greyhounds have been opportunistic on defense, led by West, Bentley and Petrosky. Jones County lost in the region to Northside and Warner Robins but won its other five region games by 87 combined points. Glynn Academy won its final five games of the regular season. The first four games of that winning streak came by shutouts as the Red Terrors outscored their final five opponents 265-26.

Northside (10-0)

Head coach: Kevin Kinsler.

Region seed: No. 1 in Region 2-AAAAA.

Playoff opponent: vs. Effingham County (6-4).

Key wins: Flowery Branch, Westside, Jones County, Warner Robins.

Key players: RB/WR Keshun Hill, Sr. (1,256 offensive yards, 21 touchdowns); QB Glenn Smith, Jr. (644 passing yards, eight touchdowns, 582 rushing yards, five touchdowns); RB Curtis Martin, Sr. (598 yards, 10 touchdowns); LB Trey Payne, Sr.; DB Marquez Moore, Sr.; OL Taylor Lay, Sr.; DL Anfirnee Chatfield, Sr.

Scouting report: The Eagles only have played one competitive, four-quarter game this season. They stepped up when tested in the second half against Warner Robins. The Eagles’ run defense is stout. On offense, Smith has developed as the season has progressed, and the coaches had the confidence to put a lot on his arm in the Warner Robins game. He’s still very dangerous as a runner. You could argue that no Middle Georgia player does as much for his offense as Hill. He plays in the backfield and remains a threat in the passing game a year after playing receiver almost exclusively. The Eagles are sound in special teams, with a solid kicking game and Hill manning the return game.

Warner Robins (8-2)

Head coach: Bryan Way.

Region seed: No. 2 in Region 2-AAAAA.

Playoff opponent: vs. Richmond Hill (8-2), Saturday.

Key wins: Jones County, Lakeside-Evans.

Key players: RB Danny Hite, Soph. (921 yards, five touchdowns); ATH DeAnthony Mack (988 offensive yards, nine touchdowns); DB Rod Harris, Sr. (seven interceptions); DB Dyvonte Collins, Jr.; QB Caden Johnston, Jr.; PK Matt Monday, Jr.; LB Kyle Priser, Sr.; DL Sherkon Wright, Sr.; OL Brian Cornish, Sr.; OL Jermaine Abron, Jr.

Scouting report: The Demons seem to rise to the occasion when they play a top-level opponent. They played great games against Peach County and Northside, while they’ve struggled at times against lesser opponents. While Johnston has been solid this year -- he played well against Northside -- the Demons still rely on their rushing attack led by Hite and Mack. Monday is a very reliable place-kicker.
