Veterans Day events in the midstate

SUNDAY

Veterans Day Program: 11 a.m. at Linwood Cemetery, Walnut Street between Pursley Street and Grant Avenue in Macon. Retired Lt. Col. Vincent A. Amos, U.S. Army, is the keynote speaker. There will also be a wreath laying at the closing of the program. 746-0589 or Iroot31@aol.com.

Fort Hawkins Veterans Day Salute: 4 p.m. at Fort Hawkins Historic Site, Emery Highway, Macon. The Fort Hawkins Commission invites the public to attend a solemn U.S. flag retirement ceremony with more than a dozen veterans organizations participating, including the 48th Brigade National Guard color guard. A light reception at the Blockhouse Replica will follow the ceremony. 742-3003. www.forthawkins.com. Free.

Second Annual Veterans Day Celebration: From 1-8 p.m. at The Riverview Ballroom, 426 Walnut St., Macon. All Middle Georgia veterans are invited to a luncheon to honor and benefit combat veterans of foreign wars, including a keynote address by state Rep. James Beverly, a special awards presentation, meal, live entertainment, tours of the Riverview Complex for Veterans residential facility and broadcast of the Atlanta Falcons football game on the big screen and eight televisions. Free and open to the public.

Warner Robins Veterans Day Ceremony: 11 a.m. in front of City Hall. The event will be preceded by a breakfast at the American Legion Post 172 off Watson Boulevard from 8:30-10 a.m. (Breakfast biscuits will be sold for $2 each.) At 10:30 a.m., motorcycles and show cars will leave the American Legion in a procession to City Hall. After the City Hall event, about noon, the procession will head back to the American Legion for a $7 barbecue lunch.

MONDAY

Telfair County Elementary School Veterans Day program: Local veterans, parents and families are invited to attend. At 9 a.m. kindergarten through fifth-grade students will host the program, with inspirational readings to commemorate the day, and the school chorus will perform patriotic music. Guest speaker: McRae native Gwenevere D. Hentz. Hentz served in the Army for 8½ years, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. (229) 868-7483.

Third annual Veterans Day concert: 11 a.m. at Veterans High School. The school’s bands and choruses will perform. The public is invited. Free. 340 Piney Grove Road, Kathleen. (478) 218-7537.

Veterans Day ceremony: 11 a.m. at the Georgia War Veterans Home, 2249 Vinson Highway SE, Milledgeville.

Flag retirement ceremony: 2 p.m. at the Carlyle Place Senior Living Community, 5300 Zebulon Road, Macon, where several veterans live. The ceremony will be led by a young employee who is an Eagle Scout, and there will be people in uniform from the Macon Police Department, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and all branches of the military.
