Mount de Sales senior Maggie Midkiff has been selected as a Wendy’s High School Heisman national finalist.

Midkiff was notified of the honor Tuesday at the school. She was a second-team All-Middle Georgia selection for basketball and soccer last season.

She has been an all-state selection in soccer the past three years and all-state in basketball as a junior. The was an all-region selection in volleyball as a junior.

Midkiff was her class president her first three years at Mount de Sales and is the student body president this year. She has a 4.0 GPA and is an AP Scholar.

Strickland, Fitzgerald chase goal of playoff success

Having grown up in south Georgia, Jason Strickland was well aware of how serious football is in Fitzgerald.

And that’s one of the reasons he left a growing program at Lamar County to take over the Purple Hurricane.

Maintaining the high standards of the regular season was his first priority, but even in August, he wasn’t settling for that.

“If we’re not in the playoffs and not making a run, then we haven’t accomplished our goal,” he said, noting that the staff was working on getting Fitzgerald to the next level.

The Purple Hurricane have won at least one playoff game every year since 2006 and have made it to at least the state quarterfinals four straight seasons. They’re off Friday, having finished the regular season last week with a 35-14 win over Thomasville

They’re 5-1 in Region 1-AA play, the fourth straight year they’ve lost no more than a game. Fitzgerald went 5-2 in 2008, its worst region mark since 1999.

And Fitzgerald has won at least eight games for the ninth straight season.

The Purple Hurricane enter the GHSA Class AA playoffs as the No. 2 seed and at home and face the third seed from Region 4-AA, which will go to the loser of Friday’s Northeast-Bleckley County game. The Raiders and Royals are tied at 5-1.

Lurking in the second round is the possibility of a huge game, with third-ranked Vidalia likely to remain undefeated and win the region. The Indians, barring a huge upset by 2-7 Jeff Davis, will take on either Dublin or Westside-Augusta.

Peach County tumbles

The loss to Carver-Columbus has cost Peach County its No. 1 ranking.

The Trojans fell from first into a tie with Washington County for fourth in Class AAA of the AP Georgia Prep Football Poll following their loss on Friday against the Tigers. Carver jumped up from fourth to second. Thomson was a unanimous selection at No. 1.

Northside remained the unanimous No. 1 in Class AAAAA following a win over Warner Robins. Despite the loss, the Demons stayed at No. 9.

Westside jumped up two spots to No. 8 in Class AAAA following a win over Howard.

Vidalia stayed at No. 3 in Class AA, while Fitzgerald and Lamar County were tied at No. 4. Fitzgerald was ranked fifth last week, and it jumped up to tie the Trojans in the fourth spot.

Wilcox County fell one spot in Class A despite posting a win over Irwin County. Wilkinson County remained No. 10 after a road loss to Lincoln County.

Adams honored

Dooly County defensive tackle Montravius Adams will receive his honorary game jersey for the 2013 Under Armour All-American Game at a ceremony Thursday at his high school.

Adams is rated as the No. 11 overall player in the nation and the third-ranked defensive tackle by ESPN.com.

The game will be played Jan. 4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Adams is considering Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Clemson among other colleges.

Jones County running back Undre Williams continued his dynamic season Friday night by rushing for a career-best 318 yards and four touchdowns in the Greyhounds’ 63-42 win over Houston County. The rushing total was the highest for any Middle Georgia player this season.

Williams now has more than 1,600 yards this season, and he has rushed for 25 touchdowns. His performance Friday was key for the Greyhounds as they continue to chase their first playoff berth since 2004. Jones County is 6-3 overall and 4-2 in GHSA Region 2-AAAAA, and it finishes off the regular season at home against Grovetown.

Jones County is tied for third in the region and has the tiebreaker over Lakeside, which is also 4-2, while Grovetown is a game behind those two teams at 3-3. Lakeside plays at Warner Robins to finish the regular season.
