An 18-year-old Southwest High School student was arrested Monday after police found he had a steak knife.
Bibb County jail records show Ruben Parker was arrested at 11:30 a.m. and charged with a possession of a weapon on school grounds. He was being held on a $1,300 bond.
Bibb County school officials said in a statement that campus police searched him after another student told a teacher about the knife. He has been suspended from school.
Stephanie Hartley, a spokeswoman for the school system, said students in such situations typically go to an evidentiary hearing, which would determine any other school discipline. She praised the classmate who stepped forward.
We definitely commend the student for coming forward to his teacher, and his teacher notified campus police immediately, Hartley said. This is exactly how its supposed to work.
Hartley said she didnt know why Parker had a knife or whether he was carrying it on his person or in a bag.
