Mercer women’s soccer clinches first-round bye

Telegraph StaffOctober 19, 2012

The Mercer women’s soccer team secured a first-round bye for the A-Sun tournament with a 2-0 win Friday at Stetson.

Friday’s A-Sun results guaranteed the Bears one of the top two seeds in the tournament. Mercer can clinch the regular-season conference title and the right to host the final two rounds of the conference tournament with a win or tie Sunday at Florida Gulf Coast.

The Bears (12-3-3) also set a program record for victories in a season.

Friday night’s win extended the Bears’ unbeaten streak to 11 matches, and it was the team’s fourth straight victory. Mercer has allowed just two goals against conference opponents this season, and it was the fifth straight shutout.

Danielle Hesse and Casey Barrett scored the Bears’ goals.
