Guess what big day I celebrated this week. My second year of being a columnist for the totally terrific Telegraph! Ive been writing this column for two years now and it has been a wonderful experience for me.
I remember sitting down at my computer writing my very first article published on Oct. 16, 2010. Although by that time I had been writing on Facebook for a while so I was very comfortable with the keyboard, writing a column for the newspaper was a new endeavor.
In fact, I was blazing new trails for the newspaper, too. Did you know Im the first canine columnist The Telegraph has ever had? Thats pretty special to me. Who knows, maybe Im the first canine columnist in the country.
When I first began writing, I wasnt sure if stories of my life, my nonprofit group Central Georgia CARES and all the animals I care about would be of interest to you. After all, Ive lived long enough to know not everybody in the world is an animal lover or interested in animal welfare.
But you know what? Apparently there are tons of readers who care about animals whether they have pets or not. And much to my delight, there are tons of readers whove told me they read my column because its entertaining.
I knew I was an animal advodog and a spokesdog and maybe even an animal evangelist, but I had no idea I was an entertainer. I wonder if I should hone any other entertaining skills like dancing or juggling just to keep it interesting.
Readers have been so gracious in expressing their enjoyment of my column. Ive received fantastic e-mails and CARES has received letters thanking me for writing.
In fact, when I was invited to participate at the recent Taste of Home event sponsored by The Telegraph, I was able to meet many of my loyal readers. About a thousand people were present at the event and Id estimate a few hundred of them stopped by my booth and mentioned they read my column each week.
That was mind-boggling to me and my group. But even more amazing was the revelation from about 10 of them who told me my article is the first thing they read in the paper every Saturday.
I was floored to know they open the paper and immediately turn to my column. Thats very humbling for me to comprehend.
So to all of you who read this column each week, please know how grateful I am to you. Thank you for caring about animals and learning how we can make this world a more compassionate place. And thank you especially for inviting me into your homes every single week.
