Perry harriers keep setting the pace

Perry High School, the second-ranked team in Class AAAA according to, won its third team championship of the season with a first-place finish at the Rock Ranch Invitational in Yatesville on Saturday. Jimmy Mehserle, Jackson Reid, John Weaks and Tyler Claxton each finished in the top 10 in the field of 121. Toney Martin of Northside High School finished 10th among individuals.

In the girls division, Northside High earned the best team finish, running second to Northside-Columbus High School. Monica Beard, Shambria Smith and Tia Williams paced the Lady Eagles. Anna Leigh Nix, daughter of former Veterans High School basketball coach Greg Nix, won the individual girls title representing Mary Persons High School. Abby Booth of Perry High finished second. Houston County High School’s Megan Asadian ran third.

Special kickers

The Houston-Peach area is blessed with kicking excellence this season. Local kickers converted each of 21 PAT attempts in six games Friday night. (Northside High kickers Isaac Rivera and John Tignor combined to make eight.) In addition, Landon Beamon of The Westfield School, Matt Monday of Warner Robins High School, Tim Yalcin of Veterans High and Daniel Ward of Perry High combined to kick five field goals from an average of 37 yards. Not to be outdone, Peach County High School’s Alfredo Cervantes and Ivan Rodriguez combined to hit seven-of-seven PATs during a Sept. 21 game at Macon County High School.

Softball quick hitters

• Peach County High earned its first state playoff berth since 2005 with a doubleheader sweep of Central-Macon High School in a best-of-three series to open the Region 2-AAA playoffs on Sept. 26. The Lady Trojans were scheduled to play at Jackson for a semifinal series on Oct. 1 and 2.

• Houston County High will be one of four teams vying for the Region 2-AAAAA championship in a double-elimination format beginning Wednesday in Augusta. The Lady Bears swept Lakeside-Evans High School in an opening-round series on Friday. Evans, Greenbrier and Jones County are the other high schools in the tournament.

• Veterans High took the top seed into the Region 2-AAAA softball tournament, which was scheduled to begin Tuesday at Southern Pines Park in Dublin. Perry entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed.

County netters face off

Thursday’s county volleyball championship scheduled for Houston County High is up for grabs. The Lady Bears are the defending champs, but Northside, Veterans and Warner Robins all have reason to think the title is within reach. Veterans High is the top seed based on its unbeaten record against the other county schools. The Lady Warhawks will play the winner of Northside/Perry in one semifinal. Houston County and Warner Robins square off in the other.
