Hooray For Online And DVRs!

Published: October 2, 2012

Today is my first day back from essentially a two-week road trip, so I have a lot of catching up to do. Still, as you will have noticed, I kept up with the blog for the last week of it, and I would have done so the first week had I not been on furlough and prevented to do so. (Isn't that nice of me?)

But if you like TV, as I do (hey, I'm the TVGuy, and you're not), two weeks without consistent TV -- especially during the week everything debuts -- can be a real strain.

Fortunately, we live in the digital age, so I was able to keep track of a lot of things via the network websites while I was on the road. And my DVR took care of the rest, especially when I eliminated the shows last night I had already seen.

Because I left before I could program that far in advance, I wasn't able to record things like the premieres for "Fringe" or "Dexter" or "Homeland," nor was I able to get them online, and my hotel Sunday didn't have Showtime.

But I saw the premiere of "Fringe" last night thanks to OnDemand, and I recorded the Showtime stuff when I got back last night. (I also have the added advantage of seeing some of the new shows through the screeners I get, which is a big time-saver).

In the old days of DVD recorders or VCRs, without online viewing, I would have only been able to record 6-8 shows at most, and watch them in the order they were recorded.

Now the only drawback -- finding the time to catch up. Even as I killed off a bunch of stuff yesterday evening when I got back, I added the shows I watch on Monday to my DVR list, and I have a bunch of other stuff to catch up on even as new episodes come out.

For example, I still have the most recent two "Sons of Anarchy" to watch before tonight's new episode (FX, 10 p.m.)

It's quite a big task I've set myself, but if anybody can sit and watch a bunch of TV for several hours in a row, it's me.

TUESDAY'S BEST BETS: "NCIS" (CBS, 8 p.m.) is new, and still dealing with the aftermath of the bomb at HQ. It's followed by "NCIS: LA" and the new hit "Vegas" at 10 p.m.

"Dancing With The Stars" (ABC, 8 p.m.) is new and followed by "Private Practice." NBC has a new "Voice," "Go On," "The New Normal" and "Parenthood" from 8-11 p.m.

Fox is all new with "Raising Hope," "Ben & Kate," "New Girl" and "The Mindy Project" from 8-10 p.m.
