ATHENS Malcolm Mitchells gradual transition back to offense is getting ramped up this week.
Georgia head coach Mark Richt said Mitchell, who spent the first four games at cornerback, will split time between offense and defense this week. Mitchell will practice with the offense on Tuesday, and work on defense on Wednesday.
Richt, speaking on his radio show, did not indicate a fuller long-term plan for Mitchell. But the need on defense is lessened with the expected return from suspension this week of safety Bacarri Rambo, which allows Sanders Commings to move back to cornerback.
That said, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo both want Mitchell on their side of the ball. Mitchell was asked Monday night if he thought his services would result in a tug-of-war between Grantham and Bobo.
I hope. Thatd mean Im doing good enough, Mitchell said. Its just whatever they feel like they need at that time. Weve got great players on defense, weve got great players on offense. Id just like to help out in any area I could.
Mitchell doesnt seem too hung up on where he ends up. In every comment, he expresses a willingness to do whatever the coaches decide, and no preference for either position. And no, it doesnt keep him up at night.
It dont keep me up. Not at all. I knew from the beginning what it was gonna be. Of course I came over to help while they were gone. At that point it was just whatever needed to be done. To me it doesnt really bother me which way I go. I just want to have fun and win.
