ATHENS - The recruiting world is fraught with ups and downs, and we saw that on Friday afternoon.
Kelsey Griffin, a defensive tackle from Hochston, committed to the Bulldogs on Friday, according to multiple recruiting sites. Griffin is rated a four-star recruit by most of the recruiting series.
But a few hours later it came out that Griffin was in fact no longer a Georgia commitment. His father told Fox Sports Net that UGA turned down the commitment.
Georgia can not comment, per NCAA recruiting rules.
Griffin would have been the 26th member of Georgia's 2013 class, and the second defensive tackle. DeAndre Johnson of Newnan committed in February.
The team also still may get John Atkins, who signed with the team last February but failed to qualify. Atkins and the other non-qualifier, Leonard Floyd, enrolled in prep school with the intention of re-signing with Georgia this February.
The Bulldogs are hoping to sign as many as 34 players this year, in order to make up for the roster attrition after last season. SEC signing rules limit teams to 25 players per recruiting cycle, but Georgia can sign nine more if that many enroll early. Georgia only signed 19 players this year, and three of them enrolled early and thus can back-count to 2011. (The spirit of the rule is that a team may only sign 100 player over a four-year period.)
