Danville city councilman dies of gunshot wound

A Danville city councilman killed himself Tuesday night in Macon, authorities said.

Jack Scarborough, 42, shot himself in the head at the Macon Behavioral Health Systems at 3500 Riverside Drive, where his wife works, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said.

Scarborough, who was a Macon-Bibb County firefighter, was elected last fall and began his term of office in January.

Macon-Bibb County Fire Chief Marvin Riggins said Scarborough had nearly 10 years of service with the department and brought a sense of maturity to the job.

“This is just very tragic and unsettling to me because Jack was one of those on his company who was a steady force,” Riggins said. “He was an excellent firefighter.”

Chaplains met with firefighters Tuesday night at Scarborough’s company on Shurling Drive and those on Riverside Drive who answered the rescue call about 7:30 p.m.

“It was pretty gut-wrenching for that company. They are family and they’d all been there with him as he was having family issues,” Riggins said.

Jones ruled the death a suicide.

Funeral services are pending with Reece Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
