Man shot in leg in Macon

Published: September 11, 2012

A 24-year-old man was shot in the leg late Monday night on Beddingfield Avenue in south Macon.

Officers were called to the 700 block of Beddingfield at about 10:45 p.m. The victim, Antoine Smith of Virginia Drive, was taken to The Medical Center of Central Georgia for treatment.

The shooting happened in a neighborhood off Houston Avenue, about three blocks north of Rocky Creek Road.

Details in a police incident report weren’t clear, but a nearby resident told officers at the scene that he’d heard gunshots and then seen two men in the street.

One of the men, apparently the victim, was being carried by the other man, a police report noted.

In a statement to police, Beddingfield Avenue resident Deon Edwards wrote that he saw “a white guy ... carrying a black male.”

Edwards wrote that he asked, “Are you OK?” and that one of the men said, “I’ve been shot.” The two men then ran behind a house.

According to Edwards, the man carrying the victim left him lying in an alley and ran away. Someone driving by apparently took the victim to the hospital.
