Macon will honor fallen first responders at the Public Safety Memorial Park on Mulberry Street on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Public safety officers and dignitaries will gather about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, with proceedings beginning at 9:58 a.m., said Bibb County sheriff’s Lt. Sean DeFoe.

Warren Selby, board chairman of Macon Regional CrimeStoppers, will serve as master of ceremonies. He said organizers wanted to commemorate the collapse of the first tower at the World Trade Center, which happened two minutes before 10 a.m.

Rabbi Larry Schlesinger, of Temple Beth Israel, will deliver the invocation before a combined honor guard from the sheriff’s office, Macon Police Department and Macon-Bibb County Fire Department present the colors.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem, Macon and Bibb County leaders will lay a wreath at the memorial.

Sheriff Jerry Modena, Police Chief Mike Burns and Fire Chief Marvin Riggins will place flowers at each monument before the Rev. Ronald Terry’s closing prayer. The pubic is invited to attend.

Several Bibb County schools will have programs commemorating the anniversary of the attacks. An observance at Barden Elementary School, 2521 Anderson Drive, begins at 9:30 a.m., while one at Southwest High School, 1775 Williamson Road, is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. near the school’s flag pole.
