Also considered: Tennessee, Arizona, Georgia Tech.
It was moving week: Wisconsin, Nebraska, Arkansas and Oklahoma State all exit my poll after losing to unranked teams. I have a bit of sympathy for Nebraska and Oklahoma State because they went on the road to other BCS conference teams. But Arkansas … see ya, for awhile probably. As for Wisconsin, as I said last week I wasn’t going to dock a team for a sluggish first-week win. But combine a sluggish first-week win with a loss to an unranked team, and you’re out of the poll. For now.
Moving in first were Notre Dame and Arizona State, the two teams I had on the precipice last week. After that, it was between Florida, Tennessee and UCLA for two spots. I settled on Florida and UCLA because those teams had the more impressive wins. UCLA knocked off Nebraska, and the Gators winning at Texas A&M was more impressive than a neutral-site win over N.C. State.
You could argue I should have put in Louisiana-Monroe. Or Arizona, or Oregon State. It’s still so early, there isn’t enough body of work for teams that you could make a case for a lot of teams. In a few weeks, hopefully, everything will start to think out a bit.
