Here are a few of the storylines Im tracking this evening.
Will the Peach County defense stand up? I get the feeling from Peach County head coach Chad Campbell that hes not entirely thrilled with the way the Trojans defense is coming together. That may be an understatement. I think Peach County will be a very good team by the time its highly anticipated game against Carver-Columbus rolls around on Nov. 2. I also think the Trojans may have a performance similar to the one they had last season against West Laurens. You may remember Peach County lost to the Raiders in the regular season before winning eight straight games on the way to the Georgia Dome. Does that mean Peach County will lose to Perry tonight? I dont think so, but I wouldnt be surprised if the Trojans trip up against Perry, Baldwin or Warner Robins over the next few weeks.
Northsides marquee matchup The Eagles also seem to struggle to find games against quality opponents, but they found a worthy foe tonight in Flowery Branch. The Falcons have morphed into a top team, but I dont think theyll have the firepower to score a ton of points against the Northside offense. I could be wrong, but I expect Northside to win by a comfortable margin.
Debut night Mary Persons head coach Brian Nelson gets his first taste of action as the top guy, but it comes against a Jackson squad that I think has the potential to be very good.
Can Westside remain undefeated against Bibb County schools? The Seminoles have never lost to a fellow in-county school, but new Central head coach Jesse Hicks turned some heads when he was hired earlier this year and said he would beat Westside to open the season. Hicks didnt repeat those claims this week to Michael A. Lough. I believe he understands this is a marathon and not a sprint. The Seminoles have more talent and experience, and I think they move to 19-0 against Bibb County schools.
Which public school will stake their claim to being the early contender for a Class A state title? No. 2 Wilcox County and No. 4 Wilkinson County will meet tonight in Rochelle, and the winner will likely announce their prescience as a top contender alongside Lincoln County for the public school state championship. I picked Wilcox County because the game is in Rochelle, but either team really could win this one.
Can Dodge beat Dublin? Dublin has owned this series all-time, and the Fighting Irish havent lost to the Indians since 2003. Dodge County looked impressive in a season-opening win over Southwest, but the step up in competition this week is substantial.
Here are the other games Ill be keeping an eye on:
Veterans at Warner Robins
Baldwin at Jefferson County
Bleckley County at Hawkinsville
FPD at George Walton
Tattnall Square at Westfield
