Friday’s top five

No. 2 Northside (0-0) at No. 4 Flowery Branch (0-0)

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: First meeting.

Key Eagles: LB Trey Payne, Sr.; DL Anfirnee Chatfield, Sr.; DL Austin Roberts, Sr.; WR Keshun Hill, Sr.

Key Falcons: WR/DB Darius Curry, Sr.; LB Jacob Allen, Sr.; OL Chandler Bridges, Sr.; WR/DL Noel Padmore, Sr.

Scouting report: Northside could find itself tested right out of the gate. The Eagles will travel to Hall County to take on a program that has won quite a bit in recent years. The Falcons have a new head coach, but they have many of the same players. A number of their top players have major college offers, including Curry. The Eagles have their sights set on a state championship, so a win over Flowery Branch would point them in the right direction. Northside will debut some new starters on offense, including new quarterback Glenn Smith. But many of the key players on defense return, giving the Eagles a chance to dominate on that side of the ball if the offense has any struggles early.

Central (0-0) at Westside (0-0)

Game time/place: 7:30 p.m./Ed DeFore Sports Complex.

Series history: Westside leads 10-0.

Last meeting: 2011, Westside won 28-18.

Key Chargers: LB Boe Bailey, Sr., LB Nigel Bowden, Sr.; OL/DL Xavier Andrews, Sr.

Key Seminoles: DL Jalen Lawrence, Sr.; T Christian Dean, Sr.; QB Noah Grayer, Sr.

Scouting report: The teams had similar scores in recent scrimmages but on different ends. Central had turnovers and penalties in losing 34-6 to Westover, while Westside survived mistakes in beating Northeast 36-0. The Seminoles have more experience and should play faster than last year. They have more depth and some weapons who will test Central’s defense, which includes two sophomores up front.

Veterans (0-0) at No. 9 Warner Robins (0-0)

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: First meeting.

Key Warhawks: WR Malik Broughton, Sr.; DL Payton Purvis, Sr.; RB Ben Thomas, Soph.

Key Demons: ATH DeAnthony Mack, Sr.; DB Rod Harris, Sr.; DL Sherkon Wright, Sr.

Scouting report: Veterans opens with a brutal stretch against Warner Robins and Northside, but Warhawks head coach David Bruce knows the potential benefits his team could see from this start. Veterans won’t see anything that should overwhelm them in region play after playing the Demons and the Eagles. The Demons have a mostly different group of players from the ones who led them to the state semifinals last season. A strong, consistent performance against the Warhawks could build some confidence going forward.

Mary Persons (0-0) at Jackson (0-0)

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Mary Persons leads 51-18.

Last meeting: 2011, Mary Persons won 36-20.

Key Bulldogs: DB Akebren Ralls, Sr.; DL Keven Jones, Sr.; OL Heath Warren, Sr.

Key Red Devils: DL Jay Woods, Sr.; DL Justin Atkins, Sr.; RB De’Eric Bell, Jr.

Scouting report: The Bulldogs had one of the largest senior classes in Middle Georgia in 2011, so this current team is seeking a little experience and leadership on the field. The Bulldogs have some talent but just not a lot of players who have played on Friday nights. Mary Persons should face a stiff test from rival Jackson. Both Woods and Atkins are major college recruits, with Atkins already committed to Georgia Tech and Woods committed to Vanderbilt. The biggest test for the Bulldogs, however, may be stopping Bell, who rushed for more than 200 yards in last year’s meeting.

No. 1 Peach County (0-0) at Perry (0-0)

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Peach County leads 27-9

Last meeting: 2011, Peach County won 24-6

Key Trojans: WR Demarcus Robinson, Sr.; OL Matthew Winters, Sr.; TE Malcolm Colvin, Sr.

Key Panthers: RB Mark Riley, Jr.; WR/DB A.J. Riley, Sr.; LB Marquez Thomas, Sr.

Scouting report: Much like Jackson and Mary Persons, Peach County and Perry have the misfortune of opening with a rival. Both teams will have to balance the emotion of playing a rival with the mistakes that often come in an opening game. The Panthers’ offense works better with multiple talented running backs, so they must find consistent secondary options to Riley in the backfield. This will be a nice dry run for the Trojans’ rebuilt defense, which lost nine starters. The Trojans’ offense, however, should be pretty potent.
