Bibb school lunch increase takes effect after Labor Day

Published: August 28, 2012

A school lunch price increase for Bibb County’s elementary school students goes into effect Sept. 4.

The students will begin paying $1 instead of 90 cents when they return to school after Labor Day, according to a school system news release. School officials said it is the first lunch price increase in more than 20 years. Students on free or reduced lunch will not be impacted.

The school board approved the increase Aug. 16, bringing the system in compliance with the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. The act requires schools to make sure the prices for paid meals are in line with reimbursements for free meals that districts receive from the federal government.

Students in middle and high school already pay $1 for lunch, and breakfast for students will continue to be 45 cents.

Anyone with questions may call the system’s school nutrition program at (478) 779-2600.
