WARNER ROBINS -- James “Eddy” Clements is expected to be sentenced Wednesday on murder and related charges in connection with hiring two men to kill his wife.

Friday, jurors convicted Clements, 56, a former sheet metal mechanic at Robins Air Force Base, on malice murder, conspiracy to commit murder and a slew of related charges. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. The least sentence possible is life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Joni Clements, 47, a clinical nurse for the 78th Medical Operations Squadron at Robins, was shot five times Feb. 8, 2011, in the couple’s Westwood Drive home in Warner Robins.

Richard Sybert, 30, a four-time convicted felon, testified he shot her at the request of her husband. Sybert’s father, Robert Sybert, 54, is accused of being the getaway driver and providing the sawed-off .22 caliber rifle used in the slaying.

Eddy Clements is expected to be sentenced by Judge Edward D. Lukemire at 3:30 p.m. in Houston County Superior Court. Lukemire presided over the weeklong trial.

Clements was also convicted of felony murder, burglary, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, kidnapping with bodily injury, possession of a firearm during a crime, use of a sawed-off rifle to commit murder and use of a firearm with a silencer to commit murder.

Both Syberts made deals with the prosecution in exchange for their testimony against Clements. Both are expected to enter pleas and be sentenced Wednesday also, according to Houston County District Attorney George Hartwig.

The original plea deal for Richard Sybert was that the death penalty would come off the table in exchange for his truthful testimony and guilty plea to all charges. Also part of the deal was a sentence recommendation of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The deal for Robert Sybert was for his truthful testimony and a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit murder and two other lesser charges. The deal called for a recommended sentence of 30 years in prison.

Eddy Clements and Robert Sybert became friends when Clements’ daughter dated a relative of Sybert’s, according to testimony during the trial. Robert Sybert also had cleaned the Clements family’s pool.
