Plans for a memorial monument for Marine Sgt. Rodney M. Davis are going forward now that organizers have met their fundraising goal.

A Rock ‘n Soul sock hop at the Terminal Station Saturday pushed the 1/5 Vietnam Veterans and the Macon Cemetery Preservation Corp. over the $75,000 needed for the monument, according to Ben Sandifer, who helped put the event together.

The dance drew about 250 people, including more than 20 members of Davis’ family.

“Any time you get the Marines involved in something, it gets done,” Sandifer said.

Besides ticket proceeds and donations, Saturday’s event also raised money through a silent auction and food sales.

“We even had someone walk in off the street who said, “I don’t want to dance, but here’s a check for $500,” Sandifer said. “The main thing is they raised the money they needed to.”

Sponsors hope to have the monument ready to dedicate during the Veterans Day weekend in November.

Davis is the only Medal of Honor recipient from Macon. On Sept. 6, 1967, during the Vietnam War, Davis threw himself on a hand grenade during combat, saving fellow Marines near him.

He could have been buried in Arlington National Cemetery, but his family wanted him buried in Linwood Cemetery in Macon’s Pleasant Hill neighborhood.

The idea for a permanent granite monument honoring Davis came during a cleanup at the cemetery in 2011.
