Macon committee talks gangs, police discipline

Published: August 13, 2012

Public Safety Committee Chairman Virgil Watkins’ proposal in to make the mayor’s office lead agency on gang-prevention efforts didn’t go anywhere during a meeting of the Macon City Council committee on Monday, but he didn’t really want it to – Watkins really sought an update on the hiring of an anti-gang coordinator.

That job is being advertised, city Internal Affairs Director Keith Moffett said. Watkins also said he’d accept a proposal from Councilman Henry Gibson to keep that job within the police department rather than the mayor’s office.

The committee also discussed disciplinary procedures for police officers, and at 5:30 p.m. were in closed session talking about a specific officer who apparently has had 11 complaints in the last year or so, with nine of them coming from the general public.
