A Macon man who was beaten early Sunday morning in the 2800 block of Elpis Street was listed in critical condition Monday at The Medical Center of Central Georgia.
A friend of 58-year-old Charles James Smith told police that he told her he was in a fight at about 1 a.m. He had been walking on Elpis Street when two men jumped him and someone walking by pulled the men off of him, according to a Macon police report released Monday.
Smith returned to his Cherry Avenue home at about 1:30 a.m. The woman told police he had been drinking, but that Smith wasnt stumbling. He had two black eyes, according to the report.
He told the woman that he knew who had attacked him, but he wasnt going to call police because he was going to deal with the situation himself, according to the report.
Smith then went to sleep and the woman called police after she was unable to wake him.
He was still unresponsive when police arrived.
Smith had suffered severe head injuries. He was taken to the Medical Center where he underwent surgery Sunday.
