For the first time in three years, back-to-school shoppers can save money on everything from crayons to computers during the two-day sales tax holiday.

The holiday, which begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and continues until midnight Saturday, means there will be no sales tax on clothes and shoes that cost less than $100 per item, school supplies that cost less than $20 an item, and personal computer-related electronics and accessories in a single purchase that cost $1,000 or less, according to the state Department of Revenue.

“We have a ton of laptops,” said Chris Ledford, a manager at the Staples store on Presidential Parkway in Macon.

Ledford said the laptops start at $350. The store is also stocked up on other items that qualify for the tax break.

In many counties across Middle Georgia, the sales tax rate is 7 cents on the dollar. So, that’s a savings of $7 for every $100 a family spends on designated items.

Any store that sells items exempt from the sales tax will be participating, whether online or in person.

The exemption does not apply to: clothing accessories, jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eye wear, watches, watch bands, cellular devices, furniture, medical supplies, janitorial supplies, computer-related accessories designed for recreational use, or items used in a trade or business or for resale.
