Washington County's Gray tears knee ligaments

Washington County’s star basketball Allisha Gray tore knee ligaments Tuesday night during training for the U.S. U18 national team’s trip to Puerto Rico for the FIBA Americas tournament.

The injuries to her ACL and MCL, which occurred during training in Colorado Springs, Col., would definitely end Gray’s involvement in the two U.S. national team events she was playing in this summer. Gray, who has already committed to play college basketball at North Carolina, will likely miss her entire senior season at Washington County. Gray's father said she will return to Georgia Thursday.

The rising senior is a two-time All-Middle Georgia Girls Basketball Player of the Year and a two-time AP Class AAA Girls Player of the Year. She was named Gatorade’s Georgia Player of the Year as a junior.

Gray led Washington County to a state championship in 2011, and the Golden Hawks lost in the championship game last year. Gray helped lead WACO to 63 consecutive victories.

The injury likely deals a huge blow to Washington County’s chase for a second state title in three years. Gray said in June she would work this summer to improve her overall game to chase another championship.

Gray had offers from all ACC and SEC schools and many of the other prominent women’s basketball programs in the country, but she choose the Tar Heels at least in small part to play alongside Norcross’ Diamond DeShields. Gray and DeShields were both set to represent the U.S. in September in the U18 3x3 world championships in Spain. Gray made the 3x3 team on Monday.
