Little League updates: South Carolina beats West Virginia

Published: August 3, 2012

1:07 p.m.: South Carolina pinch hitter Ward Hacklen's single scored Drew Smith to tie the game before shortstop Jake Beniot's two-run walk-off home run over the left-field fence wins it 8-6.

12:30 p.m.: West Virginia adds a run in the fifth inning when Hunter McGary's single scores Spencer McDougal, who singled earlier in the inning. South Carolina threatened to knot the game again in the bottom half, but stranded a runner at second base. Entering the sixth inning, West Virginia has been outhit but owns a slim 6-5 lead.

12:01 p.m.: West Virginia answered in the top of the fourth when Noah Hoskinson reached on an error and moved to third base on Noah Straders's double before scoring on a passed ball. Catcher Kobie Carpenter then homered to tie the score at 5.

11:47 a.m.: After retiring West Virginia in order in the top half of the inning, South Carolina tacked on three more runs to take a 5-2 lead.

South Carolina loaded the bases with no outs. Reece Cormier fouled out. But with West Virginia's pitcher and catcher converged down the first-base line, home plate was uncovered, allowing Trad Beatty to tag and score. Ricky Viloria's second base hit of the game plated Deric Hanko and Jacob Wright before a double play ended any further threat.

11:28 a.m.: A pair of doubles led to an early West Virginia lead. Nathanael Thompson led off with a gapper to left center field and scored on Noah Strader's single. Isiah Barksdale followed with another double to left center field that moved Strader to third base. Kobie Carpenter drove in Strader when he reached on South Carolina shortstop Jake Benoit's throwing error.

South Carolina, however, bounced back to even the score in the bottom of the inning. Jacquez Geter's double off right-field fence scored Ricky Viloria, who had singled. Benoit then singled to drive in pinch runner Deric Hanko from third. But Geter stumbled midway between third base and home plate attempting to score before being thrown out and ending the inning.

2-2 entering the third inning.

10:59 a.m.: Started late due to pictures being rained out Thursday.

Both pitchers navigated through the first inning without much trouble as South Carolina and West Virginia are scoreless after the first inning.
