First look: Lakeside High School

Editor’s note: The GHSA realignment and reclassification process joined Middle Georgia high schools Houston County, Jones County, Northside and Warner Robins with four schools from Columbia County near Augusta, forming the new Region 2-AAAAA.

This is the last of four weeks in which The Sun News takes a look at the Columbia County high schools: Evans, Greenbrier, Grovetown and Lakeside.

Lakeside High School

Established: 1988

Location: Evans

Director of athletics: Donnie Burch, head softball coach

Football coach: Jarrett Troxler, third year

School colors: burgundy, silver and white

Mascot: Panthers

Principle rival: Evans

Famous graduates: Lady Antebellum members Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley.

Championships: Cheerleading (1994); boys golf (1999, 2006, ’07, 10); girls golf (2012); literary (2011)

Football history: 108-139-2 all-time. One region title. One 10-win season. 2011 record: 6-5; lost to Warner Robins in first round of Class AAAA playoffs

NOTEWORTHY: Lakeside’s boys finished third in the GHSA Class AAAA state cross country meet in 2011, putting four runners in the top 23. One of them, senior Sid Vaughn, also won state in the 3,200 meter run. He is off to the University of Georgia on scholarship. Lakeside’s girls won the 2011-12 Region 2-AAAA director’s cup for overall athletic excellence. The Lakeside girls were eighth in the state overall. Football team owns three consecutive shutouts against its principle rival, Evans High. Home football games are played at Panther Stadium, which features a new grass playing surface and no track around the perimeter of the field.

QUOTABLE: “You’ve got to have the funds to run a first-class program.” Troxler on the importance of the Panthers’ Touchdown Club -- established in 2007 -- in the program’s emergence. Troxler arrived at the school in 2007 with Jody Grooms, now the head coach at Wayne County High School. Since then, football program has a .596 winning percentage. That’s 200 percentage points better than in the prior 19 years.
