Ronald Dean Bittner

An unnamed Perry police officer shot a gunman Wednesday night at the Mason Terrace Apartments.

Ronald Bittner was shot in the shoulder after refusing to drop the weapons he had in both hands at about 9:40 p.m., said Capt. Bill Phelps, acting police chief.

“He had been drinking all day and he was firing a shotgun and two handguns,” Phelps said. “He had been doing that off-and-on all day.”

When police arrived, they ordered Bittner to let go of the guns, but he ducked behind a building and raised a gun toward an officer, Phelps said.

The officer fired and hit him the shoulder.

Bittner was treated and released from the Medical Center of Central Georgia and was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, Phelps said. He was being held in the Houston County jail Thursday without bond.

The GBI is investigating the shooting and agents were conducting interviews Thursday morning.
