Temperatures that soared well above 100 degrees took its toll Saturday at the Georgia District 5 Little League Softball Tournament.

Macon, which had nine players, had one of its players get ill from the heat, forcing the team to forfeit to Western after Western had already taken a 12-0 lead.

There were two out in the top of the third when the game was called.

“I hate they didn’t have enough players,” Western manager Mike Phillips said.

Western started off hot with seven runs in the first inning. Rebecca Johnson had two RBI in that inning, while Hannah Griffin, Megan Frank, Abigail Pelt and Ashley Walker also drove in runs.

Western added two more runs in the second and three more runs in the third before the game was called.

Phillips said his team wasn’t bothered by the heat.

“As much as we play travel ball, they are used to it,” he said.

Western will play again at 6 p.m. on Monday, facing the winner of Sunday’s 2 p.m. game between Macon and Warner Robins American.
